About Christian Benteke
Christian Benteke Liolo was born on 3 December 1990 in Kinshasa, Zaire. He plays as a striker for the Belgium national team and Liverpool, who he joined in 2015.09.09
Having played youth football since 1999 for JS Pierreuse, Benteke joined Standard Liege’s youth academy in 2004 before joining the youth set-up at Genk in 2006.
Benteke made his senior debut for Genk in the 2007-08 season and spent one and a half seasons with the club before moving back to Standard Liege. Benteke made 11 appearances and won the Belgian First Division title in his first season with the club. Over the next two seasons, Benteke was loaned out twice, to Kortrijk and Mechelen, before returning to Genk for the 2011-12 season.
Benteke scored 48 goals in Belgium before moving to England. On 31 August 2012, Benteke signed for Aston Villa for a fee of around £7 million. He scored on his debut on 15 September 2012 in a 2-0 win over Swansea City.
Benteke scored 23 goals in his first season with the Villains, and followed that up with tallies of 11 and 15 after a couple of injury-hit seasons. Benteke was named Premier League Player of the Month for April 2015.
On 22 July 2015, Liverpool signed Benteke after activating his £32.5 million release clause. He made his debut for the club on 9 August 2015 against Stoke City and scored his first goal for the club nine days later in a 1-0 win over Bournemouth.
Benteke made his debut for the Belgian national team on 19 May 2010 in a friendly match against Bulgaria. He scored his first goal for the side on 15 August 2012 in a 4-2 win over the Netherlands. Benteke became a regular in the side but was ruled out of the 2014 World Cup after rupturing his Achilles tendon.
