About Chris Smalling
Chris Smalling was born on 22 November 1989 in London, England. He plays as a centre-back for the England national team and Manchester United, who he joined in 2010. Smalling is also capable of playing at right-back
Smalling began playing youth football at Walderslade in 1998 before moving to Millwall’s academy. At 16 years old, Smalling joined Maidstone United’s youth academy and made his debut for the senior side on 11 April 2007 against Tonbridge Angels. The following season, Smalling made 15 appearances for the senior side, scoring 1 goal.
Smalling joined Fulham in June 2008 and was made captain of the club’s development squad. He made his Premier League debut on 24 May 2009 in the final game of the 2008-09 season. The following season, Smalling made 18 appearances for the Cottagers.
On 27 January 2010, Manchester United announced they had signed Smalling for an undisclosed fee, with the player staying at Fulham for the remainder of the 2009-10 season. Smalling made his competitive debut for Manchester United on 8 August 2010 in the side’s Community Shield win over Chelsea. With United, Smalling has won two Premier League titles and three Community Shields.
Smalling made his England debut on 2 September 2011 in a Euro 2012 qualifier against Bulgaria. He was named in England’s 2014 World Cup squad, and started their final group match against Costa Rica. Smalling was named in the Team of the Tournament in the 2011 European U21 Championships.
