Mesut Ozil’s interview with Kicker
On Sunday, respected German magazine Kicker published an interview with Mesut Ozil.
Kicker did not put there whole interview with Ozil online but their magazine put a much longer version out as well.
In the online interview we learnt that Ozil’s future at Arsenal depends on whether Arsene Wenger stays at the club.
Ozil’s contract is up at Arsenal come the end of 2017/2018 whilst Arsene Wenger is out of contract come the end of this season.
Ozil wants the number 10 shirt at Arsenal
So, whilst in England, the Kicker interview with Ozil is built up as the German playmaker hoping for Wenger to stay at Arsenal, the former Real Madrid star had another condition as well.
After discussing Wenger, Ozil also talked about the number 10 shirt at Arsenal, currently held by Jack Wilshere.
Ozil tells Kicker: “I would love to wear the 10 shirt, I always wanted that, the club knew from the beginning. When I came to Arsenal in 2013, Jack Wilshere already had the 10. The club said I would get the 10 when it was free. She has been free since Wilshere’s departure in the summer – I have not been able to do it yet.”
Presumably, the number 10 shirt is still not available at Arsenal since Jack Wilshere is only out on loan at Bournemouth and will return for next season.
It is somewhat surprising that Ozil is so keen on the number 10 shirt, but he surely wouldn’t talk publicly about this if he didn’t see it as a key factor in negotiations with Arsenal.
