Liverpool to activate Christian Benteke’s £32.5m release clause in the “next few hours” [HLN]

Big news for Liverpool fans on Thursday: the Reds are set to meet the £32.5m release clause in Christian Benteke’s contract at Aston Villa.

The news have been broken by Belgium media outlet Het Laatste Nieuws (HLN), who come with a strong degree of credibility when it comes to their national players.

According to HLN, Liverpool will post their offer in the “next few hours”, while the transfer could be completed by this weekend.

HLN further add that Liverpool have decided to move for Benteke now, as they have just received a windfall from the sale of Raheem Sterling to Man City.

Liverpool have already signed Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Bogdan, Danny Ings and Joe Gomez this summer.

The 24-year-old’s position at Villa has looked bleak for some time, and it was noticeable that Tim Sherwood kept Benteke on the bench during his side’s first pre-season match of the summer against Fulham.

Manchester United have also been linked to Benteke in recent days after the striker ‘favourited‘ a tweet linking him to Old Trafford.
