Everton to hijack Newcastle’s Dennis Praet deal

Everton, Newcastle & Dennis Praet

The Times on Thursday report on a transfer story linking Everton, Newcastle and Sampdoria midfielder Dennis Praet.

23-year-old Praet moved to Sampdoria last summer having spent five years learning his trade at Anderlecht.

Last season, Praet made 32 appearances in Serie A racking up one goal and one assist for Samp.

He’s now at the centre of a battle between Everton and Newcastle for his signature.

Dark clouds over Newcastle

The 2017-18 campaign has started horribly for Newcastle United.

Will Rafa Benitez be the first Premier League manager to leave their post this season?

After back to back defeats to Tottenham and Huddersfield in the league, Newcastle suffered more woe on Wednesday night. The Magpies were dumped out the League Cup by Nottingham Forest, as Newcastle lost 3-2 at home.

On the transfer front at St James’ Park, the Times on Thursday report that “Siem de Jong has turned down a move to Reading and is expected to join Ajax from Newcastle United.”

Who will sign Dennis Praet?

The Times assess the battle between Everton and Newcastle for Praet as follows:

Newcastle sent scouts to watch the 23-year-old in Sampdoria’s match against Benevento, but Everton are looking into signing the Belgian.

Praet is said to command a £18.5 million transfer fee, while it’s worth noting that Italy’s Sport Mediaset believe that Newcastle have been knocked back in an approach for the Belgian.

But does Praet joining Everton make sense?

Everton look well stocked in midfield. In fact, do they have too many players fighting for positions already?

Ronald Koeman already has Morgan Schneiderlin, Idrissa Gueye, Tom Davies and Muhamed Besic available to fill the more defensive midfield role.

Moving higher up the pitch, Everton have Davy Klaassen, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Kevin Mirallas and Wayne Rooney.

This weekend Newcastle take on West Ham at home, while Everton travel to Chelsea on Sunday.
