Liverpool & Southampton
Are the Saints actually Liverpool’s feeder club?
Over the past few season, the Reds have bought a long line of players from St Mary’s, and on Tuesday the Sun table a story claiming that Jurgen Klopp is eyeing up two more Saints stars.
In the past twenty-four months, Liverpool have paid Southampton almost £100m in transfer fees as they’ve brought Sadio Mane, Dejan Lovren, Nathanial Clyne, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert to Anfield.
Two more targets
Liverpool drew 0-0 at Southampton last weekend in the Premier League, and Virgil van Dijk was superb at the heart of Claude Puel’s backline.
The Dutchman is now listed as being on the Reds shopping list, as is 21-year-old full-back Sam McQueen. The tabloid tell their readers:
Liverpool are lining up a sensational double £40m January swoop for Southampton pair Virgil van Dijk and Sam McQueen.
The former Celtic centre back only signed a new SIX-YEAR deal at St Mary’s in May but Klopp is confident he can prise him away from the south coast.
McQueen’s contract is up at the end of the season and he is stalling on accepting the offer of an extension.
Whether there’s any truth in the transfer story is anyone’s guess.
For all the criticisms of Liverpool’s defence, it’s worth noting they’ve let in the same amount of goals (14) as the likes of Man United and Everton, and just two more than Arsenal.
