‘I turned down Barcelona’ is not a phrase that too many players can claim as their own…
But that is precisely what Croatian legend Darijo Srna has revealed today, having signed a new contract with his beloved Shakhtar Donetsk.
Since the departure of Dani Alves from the Camp Nou last summer, the problems at right-back for Luis Enrique’s men have been painfully evident.
Hence, veteran Srna was contacted by officials from the Liga side regarding a possible January transfer.
However, the 13-year Shakhtar man never even considered the move, revealing:
‘I want to finish my career at Shakhtar. And when the president told me that he offered me a new contract, I only thanked him in response.’
‘I agreed to any terms. You probably know about the story with Barcelona, however, as I said, my heart is here. I’m happy at Shakhtar. After a 14-year spell with them, you do not consider yourself a part of the club – you become a member of the family,’ according to Goal.com.
In an era of football where money has seemingly become every bit as important as loyalty and love of your club, the words of Srna come as a timely reminder that there are still players out there who simply can’t be bought.
