The Mirror on Sunday have scooped quotes from Chelsea striker Diego Costa revealing how the Brazilian born attacker came close to joining Liverpool.
Costa, 26-years-old, moved to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid last summer for £32 million.
One year before that, however, Liverpool were trying their best to prise the Spanish international away from the Vicente Calderón Stadium to Anfield.
According to the fresh revelations, Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers tried to sign Costa in 2013, and the Scousers actually submitted a bid of £21 million to the Rojiblancos in order to meet Costa’s then release clause.
In the end Liverpool’s approach came to nothing, however, as Diego Costa agreed a new contract with Atletico that extended his deal in Spain until 2018 while he also doubled his salary in Madrid.
Diego Costa has told the Mirror on Sunday:
I was close to leaving Atletico. Liverpool are a great team, but after fighting so hard and overcoming difficulties to get my place at Atletico, how could I leave?
I thought it was very important to keep growing with Atletico and to play there for many years.
Since joining Chelsea, Diego Costa has scored 17 goals in the Premier League in his debut season in England.
Chelsea return to action on Wednesday night, when they welcome PSG to Stamford Bridge in the Champions League.
