Southampton are signing Wesley Hoedt
Are the dominos about to start falling in the summer transfer market?
For the majority of the summer window, Southampton centre-half Virgil Van Dijk has been tipped to leave the club.
Indeed, the Dutch centre-half has already handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s.
Van Dijk is a target for Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal if the paper talk is to be believed.
And belief that Van Dijk is about to leave St Mary’s has been stepped up after news has broken from Italy linking Lazio’s Wesley Hoedt with a move to the Saints.
Lazio deal imminent
Last week, Italian transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio reported that Southampton have offered Lazio 17 million euros for Wesley Hoedt.
23-year-old Hoedt made 21 league starts for Lazio last season. However he’s widely believed to be available after he played no part in last weekend’s Italian Super Cup win over Juventus.
Hoedt, who has made four appearances for the Dutch national team, is under contract at Lazio until 2019.
On Sunday, Lazio were held to a 0-0 draw by SPAL in their Serie A opener. After the game, Lazio’s sporting director Igli Tare made the following statement on Hoedt’s move to Southampton:
Hoedt asked to be sold because he wanted to be the absolute protagonist and here there was no guarantee of that. He will soon be transferred to Southampton, for him it’s been a positive experience here at Lazio.
What about Wimmer?
Should Southampton sign Hoedt, as is expected, that will also surely bring to an end all speculation that Tottenham’s Kevin Wimmer will join the Saints.
Indeed, it was reported over the weekend that Austrian international Wimmer is now likely to join West Brom and not the Saints this summer.
