Ozil’s contract situation
With Arsenal entering their time-honoured mid-season crisis, a lot of the attention is centering around Mesut Ozil.
Like Alexis Sanchez, Ozil’s current deal runs out at the end of next season but Arsenal fans are much more worried about their Chilean start than their German one.
Gooners love their German maestro and are hoping he signs a new contract, but for all his silky skills and touches, the unavoidable truth is that he doesn’t deliver in big games.
It’s not like he could much in the last few games anyway – he’s been missing through flu.
Interestingly, there seems to have been a sea change with Arsenal fans; time was, they didn’t dare criticize him, but there’s now a vocal anti-Ozil brigade in the Ozil ranks.
It seems some fans wouldn’t mind if he left at this point – and they may feel even more strongly about that after hearing his latest condition.
Needs Wenger to stay
Speaking to German paper Kicker, Ozil explained that he wants to stay – but only on condition that Wenger stays too.
Ozil seems a bit worried that Wenger might be off in the near future – and he won’t sign if that’s the case:
“I am very, very happy at Arsenal and have let the club know that I would be ready to sign a new contract. The fans want that I stay and now it is just down to the club.”
“The club knows that I am here most of all because of Arsène Wenger. He is the one who signed me and he is the one whose trust I have. The club also knows that I want to be clear what the manager is going to in the future.’
This will leave a lot of Arsenal Fan TV’s ‘Wenger Out’ brigade torn: would they want Wenger to stay if it meant keeping Ozil?
