Target Virgil Van Dijk? Arsenal fans worry about Shkodran Mustafi

Arsene Wenger on Shkodran Mustafi

Arsene Wenger sat down in front of the press on Thursday ahead of the weekend’s match between Liverpool and Arsenal.

With a week left in the summer transfer window, Wenger was asked about the club’s activities in the transfer market

The Gunners boss has previously commented that Arsenal need to ship out players before the sign new recruits.

But is one of the players heading for the Emirates Stadium exit door Shkodran Mustafi?

Mustafi & Inter Milan

A few weeks ago, Italian transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio dropped an eye-catching transfer rumour.

Di Marzio claimed that Inter Milan are trying to sign Arsenal’s World Cup winner Shkodran Mustafi.

Mustafi joined the Gunners just over a year ago in a 35 million deal from Valencia.

He impressed in his first season in the Premier League, ending the year with an FA Cup winners’ medal.

Wenger opens to door

When asked on Thursday about Mustafi’s future at the club, Wenger left Gooners nervous. The Arsenal boss said:

No I don’t expect him to go. It’s difficult for me to talk about any individual cases.

It’s always very difficult to predict what will happen and how will you respond to any solicitation.

The only way in which fans would likely swallow a Mustafi exit would be if Arsenal sign Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton.

Van Dijk is still expected to leave St Mary’s before the transfer window slams shut in a week’s time.

Liverpool seem unlikely to land the Dutch defender after their fallout with Southampton, leaving Arsenal and Chelsea the likely suitors for the centre-half.

Arsenal fans react

So is Mustafi a goner?

That’s a huge worry for Arsenal fans, who largely believe the club is already weak at the back.
