Speaking to the club’s website after Sunday’s win, Southampton manager Claude Puel confirmed that Charlie Austin requires shoulder surgery and could be out for months.
“I don’t exactly know how long he will stay out, but I think normally he needs surgery,” Puel told southamptonfc.com after Sunday’s win against Middlesbrough.
“That will mean he’s out for between three and four months normally.
“It is difficult to play without Charlie, because he scores a lot of goals for us, but it’s important now to look forward with all of the players.”
While at Burnley, Austin dislocated the same shoulder three times in just over a year and has already had two previous operations on it.
The 27-year-old will be a big miss for the Saints. Austin has already scored 9 goals in all competitions this season.
The likes of Nathan Redmond, Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez are expected to step up in his absence.
The Saints did well without Austin on Sunday as they won 1-0 against Middlesbrough.
Summer signing Sofiane Boufal’s scored the only goal of the game in the second half.
