If Tottenham are to sustain a challenge on all three fronts as their exciting season moves into February, they will likely need Jan Vertonghen.

The Belgium defender had been an ever-present alongside Toby Alderwereld in the Spurs defence – the best in the Premier League this season.

But, an elbow from Crystal Palace Connor Wickham – for which he now faces an FA charge and likely three-game ban- meant Vertonghen missed the final 15 minutes of the Tottenham win at Crystal Palace with what looked like a serious knee injury.

Tottenham have still not announced how long Vertonghen is out for as they await test results and it was thought that the Belgium defender had not travelled to Mauricio Pochettino’s training camp this week, in Barcelona.

On Monday a picture emerged on Instagram of Vertonghen, with Mousa Dembele and Michel Vorm, in Barcelona with a Spurs fan.

The crutches will certainly be a concern to Spurs fans hoping for an unlikely tilt at the Premier League title.

The Tottenham supporter that took the photo was also asked about Vertonghen’s fitness, see the pic below.
