Hamburg 1 – Augsburg 0
The opening Saturday of the Bundesliga season may have produced the most bizarre injury of the 2017/2018 campaign.
After eight minutes of Hamburg’s season, Nicolai Müller put them in front against Augsburg.
After scoring five goals in the Bundesliga last season and nine the campaign before, Müller was clearly delighted.
Cue a celebration where Nicolai Müller spun himself around in joyful abandon.
Unfortunately for Müller, he appeared to do one too many spins and collided with the corner flag.
It was all an unseemly mess in the carnage of scoring early in the campaign.
Hamburg’s Nicolai Müller out for 7 months
After scoring Hamburg’s opening goal, Nicolai Müller was stretchered off.
On Sunday, Hamburg have confirmed that Nicolai Müller will be out for seven months.
Nicolai Müller tore his knee ligaments during the celebration in what must have been a very painful injury.
The 29-year-old was considered one of Hamburg’s best attacking players and this injury has been greeted with gloom and doom by their supporters.
After just one game!
Will Hamburg buy now?
After the game, both Hamburg CEO Jens Todt and coach Markus Gisdol were asked about signing a replacement for Nicolai Müller in the summer transfer window.
Todt: “You do not have to panic. We are properly occupied in the front. ” He added that a new striker was “not a must… but we will discuss this and examine all options.”
Gisdol added: “We have to see if it makes sense to be active again.” (Quotes via Bild.)
Meanwhile, Nicolai Müller looks set to endure one of the most frustrating seasons imaginable.
