Feyenoord v Watford
Two clubs that rarely get mentioned in the same sentence are Watford and Feyenoord.
But that’s changed on Tuesday as thousands of fans of the reigning Eredivisie champions are busy flooding Watford’s official Instagram account with messages.
The Hornets are not only one of the smallest Premier League sides when it comes to ticket sales, but they have a very small online following too.
On Instagram, for example, they only have 144,000 followers, and most posts receive between 50 to 100 comments at best.
But that’s changed on one video from Watford’s pre-season training, as Feyenoord fans have been blowing up the post with big engagement numbers.
What’s going on?
The whole issue centres around winger Steven Berghuis, who enjoyed a successful loan spell with Feyenoord last season.
He scored seven goals in 30 Eredivisie appearances, and Feyenoord want him back.
Watford paid £4.5 million on Berghuis two summers ago, and it’s believed they want to get that money back in any deal with Feyenoord.
The manager of the Dutch champs, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, has gone on record saying:
Berghuis still wants to come to Feyenoord, but Watford’s cooperation is very difficult.
Cue thousands on messages on the Watford post calling for fans’ favourite to come back to Holland.
