According to a growing number of breaking reports this evening, Premier League outfit Newcastle United have signed Borussia Dortmund midfielder/defender Mikel Merino on loan for next season.
Merino, a 21-year-old Spanish youth international, arrived at Dortmund from La Liga side Osasuna in 2016, having played an impressive role for Los Rojillos despite his tender years.
A versatile player who is equally adept in either central defence or a deep-lying midfield position, Merino has been likened to fellow Osasuna youth product Javi Martinez, now of Bayern Munich.
Despite standing at almost 6ft 3inches tall, the youngster is a master on the ball, and has been lauded for both his intelligence and ability to keep possession.

Sources in Germany had suggested that a deal between Newcastle and Dortmund for Merino was close for several days now, with the player happy to make the move to St James’ Park having appeared in just 8 Bundesliga games last season.
And, according to reports across both the English and German media this evening, a deal for the talented Spaniard has been completed, with Merino likely to undergo his medicals with the Magpies tomorrow.
