Prankster tricks Twitter into believing Fernando Torres is joining Newcastle

Torres to Newcastle?

An incredible rumour started doing the rounds on Twitter this evening, claiming Fernando Torres was close to joining Championship club Newcastle.

Given the striker’s playing time at Atletico Madrid has been significantly reduced, a move away might seem possible on the one hand.

But on the other hand, it was clear when Torres returned to the Calderon last year that he intended it to be his final club before retiring.

There is the link with Rafa Benitez; the pair of course worked together at Liverpool, so the notion of a reunion in the Championship is an appealing and romantic one.

But of course, it’s absolute horsesh*t.

Obvious prank

Because when you got to the source of the rumour, it all became clear.

Although Thomas Clements did do a good job with his photoshopping of Mundo Deportivo and Sport, he could have made more effort with the Spanish grammar.

Because the headlines on the front pages don’t make any grammatical sense, and on top of that, it’s way too early for the front pages of tomorrow’s papers not only to be leaked, but to be printed and ready.

But well done to Thomas, his prank worked and he caught out plenty of people hook, line and sinker.
