According to a report from The Independent this evening, Manchester United have set their sights on a Chelsea star, after news broke that the Old Trafford side have hit a major snag in their bid for Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic.
Serie A star
Perisic, a Croatian international and Euro 2016 standout, has performed admirably in a struggling Inter side this season, racking up 11 goals and 9 assists as the sleeping giants finished 7th in Serie A.
While a move to Old Trafford had looked very much on the cards earlier in the week, a potentially-insurmountable stumbling block has seemingly been hit, after the Italian side demanded £50 million for their star winger.
United, meanwhile, are reportedly unwilling to splash out any more than £35 million for Perisic, meaning Mourinho has set his sights elsewhere.
The Portuguese tactician’s backup plan in the case that they miss out on the Croatian is a move for Chelsea star Willian, who Mourinho managed during his time at Stamford Bridge.
The Brazilian has been in and out of the Blues’ starting XI under Antonio Conte this season, with the Red Devils hierarchy confident that a deal could be struck.
To make way for the arrival of either Perisic or Willian, Mourinho is reportedly willing to part ways with Frenchman Anthony Martial, who has become expendable at the club.
While the Manchester side are by no means pushing Martial out, the right offer could see the former Monaco star depart Old Trafford this summer.
