Man United v Sunderland: Premier League preview
Manchester United host relegation-threatened Sunderland on Boxing Day.
David Moyes, AKA The Chosen One, will return to Old Trafford for the first time as an opposition manager since his sacking in 2014.
Man United come into the match in good form. Jose Mourinho’s side are unbeaten in 10 matches in all competitions and have won four on the spin.
Moyes v Man United
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been central to the Red Devil’s recent success. The 35-year-old scored a brace in last weekend’s 2-0 win over West Brom, taking his tally for the season to 16.
Man United still find themselves 13 points off league leaders Chelsea, but they have cut the gap on fourth-place Arsenal to four points.
Last weekend’s 1-0 win over Watford was not enough to lift Sunderland out of the relegation zone.
Moyes’ side do have reason to believe, however, after four wins in their last seven.
Manchester United have only one first-team injury, which makes for a positive change.
Luke Shaw is expected to be the only absentee for the visit of Sunderland. The left-back is likely to return in January.
Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan return following respective knee and ankle injuries. The latter is likely to start the match.
Sunderland’s Adnan Januzaj is not eligible to face his parent club. Wahbi Khazri is expected to start in his place.
Javier Manquillo, Steven Pienaar and Billy Jones have all trained ahead of the match at Old Trafford and will face late fitness tests.
