Five year deal
Chelsea might be in ‘crisis’ at the minute, but one of their former players, Frank Lampard has claimed it’s not all doom and gloom at the club, and there could well be a surprising turn in fortunes.
Conte is of course tied to the club for the next couple of years, and signed a new deal this summer with improved terms – yet did not extend the duration of his Chelsea stay, leading to a fair bit of speculation.
“We are all reacting to the negative stories that are around Chelsea and the manager at the moment, but they may well sign two or three top class players in the next few weeks, fly out of the blocks and he might end up getting a five year contract at the end of this season,” Lampard told Yahoo Sport.
“He has got a two-year contract with the [club] and we are all second guessing what might be happening behind the scenes at the club.
“I agree it has not all been positive this summer, but this team and this manager won the Premier League title a few months ago, so let’s not write them off.
“I have seen a few high profile pundits saying Conte would not be Chelsea manager a year from now, but you can probably say that about just about every manager in the Premier League and it would be a decent bet.
“Only one team will win the title this season and everyone else might be described as a failure in some quarters. There is such a short shelf life in management these days.”
Another thing Lampard had to say was that Conte could well see more players come in this summer – with the squad quite thin, and Conte himself making it clear he wants to see additions to the side to allow him to do his job and put Chelsea in the best possible situation to compete in all four competitions this season.
The Blues have even been linked with a massive £200 million spending spree – but with the market soon to close, it remains to be seen if they can bring in the players their manager wants.
