According to a report from Mundo Deportivo this evening, Spanish giants Barcelona are targeting a move for Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka, following difficulties in their attempts to bring in Jean-Michel Seri from Nice.
Goretzka, a 22-year-old all action German midfielder, has been with Schalke since a move from Bochum in 2013, but his contract with Die Knappen is set to expire next summer.
As a result, speculation was rife earlier this summer that the 9-time capped international had agreed to join Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich on a free transfer in 12 months time.
However, Goretzka himself his since refuted these rumours, insisting that he has not agreed a deal with any other club.
The goalscoring midfielder has been earmarked by many of Europe’s top clubs as a potential free agent target next summer, though La Liga giants Barcelona have other ideas in mind.
As per the aforementioned report from Mundo Deportivo, the Blaugrana hope to coax Goretzka to the Camp Nou over the next ten days, after moves for both Jean-Michel Seri of Nice and Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho fell through.
However, the board in Catalonia are likely to be met with stubborn resistance from their Schalke counterparts, with the German club still hopeful of extending the contract of their crown jewel beyond next June.
