Barcelona set to trigger €32m release clause of Real Sociedad defender

Triggering release clause

Barcelona are set to trigger the release clause of Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez, Marca report.

The Spanish club are flush with transfer funds after Paris Saint-Germain triggered the €222 million release clause of Neymar. Not all of that money will go into the transfer budget but at least €32m will be spent on Martinez.

Who is Inigo Martinez?

The 26-year-old defender is a Spain international who has been linked with Barcelona for years. He’s also said to be of interest to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola. As this would imply, Martinez is a ball-playing centre-half.

His greatest strength lies in his ability to start attacks from the back. With Thomas Vermaelen injured and Marlon Santos lacking experience, Martinez is a top signing to bring in to increase options in defence.

Having played for Sociedad for the entirety of his career, it’s a big leap for Martinez to make. But it’s one that will see his wage and his medal haul increase. It will also improve his World Cup 2018 prospects.
