Under its former guise of the Ballon d’Or and now renamed “The Best” – Monday’s gala ceremony in Zurich saw Cristiano Ronaldo recognised as the best player of the past year.
This comes as no surprise since Ronaldo bagged the Champions League and Euro 2016 in a trophy filled calendar year.
Voting for The Best came down to national team coaches, players and members of the media, with the results published shortly after the ceremony.
Chile coach only votes Alexis!
Whilst two Premier League stars failed to win anything on the night, both Alexis Sanchez & Zlatan picked up some amusing votes.
Alexis’ was very humorous since Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi simply voted the Arsenal star in first and did not even bother putting down options for two and three.
Sanchez got 19 votes in total. Amongst them was Wales boss Chris Coleman who had him down as the second best player of 2016.
Sweden still love Zlatan
Meanwhile, Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic also made an appearance after a goal-laden year with PSG and now the Red Devils.
Both the current Sweden coach (Jan Andersson) and Sweden captain (Andreas Granqvist) voted Zlatan Ibrahimovic in first place.
No other person on The Best voting placed Zlatan first.
Perhaps it says a lot more about the voting than anything else…
Full voting breakdown is here.
