During last night’s UEFA Cup match in St. Petersburg, Jens Lehmann lived up to his billing as one of the maddest keeper on the planet by throwing his toys out his pram and ripping off teammate Khalid Boulahrouz’s headband from his head as the defender failed to live up to the shot-stoppers’ high expectations.
The incident blew up early in the second half. In classic John McEnroe fashion, Boulahrouz was sporting a headband presumably in an effort to keep his hair out his eyes. However, when the Dutchman directed a header out for a Zenit corner, when Lehmann was convinced that Boulahrouz could have done better, the German blew a fuse.
Charging straight over to Boulahrouz, Lehmann ripped off the defender’s headband, turned back towards the advertising hoardings before angrily throwing the offending accessory behind his goal. For his part, Boulahrouz reacted like the proverbial rabbit in the headlights.
The footage can be seen here.

God am I glad Arsenal sold him. He is such a head case. Almunia may have his flaws, but one thing he won’t do is go completely mental. Can you imagine if Lehmann had done this to Gallas?

Lehmann was totally right to deliver a wake-up call, albeit in odd fashion: Boulahrouz absolutely deserved it. He hasn’t had his head in the game since he arrived at Stuttgart. If Khalid played like he use to in Hamburg, Stuttgart would be 3 places higher in the table and would not be trailing Zenit in the UEFA Cup.
