Blatant violence with intent is something that doesn’t happen all too often in American soccer, so when DC United keeper Josh Wicks stomped on Seattle Sounders forward Fredy Montero on Wednesday night everyone stood up to take notice.
How Wicks thought he could get away with his assault is mind-boggling.
With the teams facing off in the US Open Cup final, Seattle ran out 2-1 winners. But all the post-match focus fell on Wicks’ moment of madness after conceding the opener midway through the second half.
Winger Steve Zakuani headed the ball into the path of Freddy Ljungberg, who saw his effort stopped smartly by keeper Wicks. Unfortunately Wicks was unable to hold onto the ball, and hotshot Fredy Montero burst onto the scene to tuck in the opener.
Amazingly, Wicks then walked toward Montero, who was lying on the ground, and stomped on the striker with both feet. Wicks was red-carded and had to be forced off the field by officials.
Wicks’ assault was unprofessional, uncalled for and downright dumb.
The stomping incident can be seen here.

I had the privilege of attending this Cup Final @ RFK and the atmosphere was very impressive. Like most of the fans watching the match, we were all shell-shocked to see Wicks shown a straight red card, for what we thought was nothing(we hadn’t noticed the incident, most likely thinking that Montero was still on the ground for Wicks original challenge). However, watching the incident on television, makes the case against Wicks stone-cold. What a moron and a disgrace.

This is an embarrassment to my local club as well as the MLS. That kid is out of control. He almost came to blows with his own defender (Burch I think) in the game before that too. what an idiot. I do not want to see him in a DC United shirt again.

Not surprised to see this mouthbreather acting like an animal. That DC united did nothing to punish him as they claimed they would is standard to be expected as well. The team is trash as evidenced on the field and in the front office.
