Tuesday night brought the latest round of fixtures in the Copa Libertadores, and arguably the most impressive result of the night saw Newell’s Old Boys register a 2-0 away win at 2011 Copa Sudamericana champs Universidad de Chile.
Maximiliano Rodriguez (18) and Martin Tonso (83) did the damage for Newell’s up-front, while defensively the visitors maintained a clean sheet thanks to brilliant late goalline save from defender Victor Lopez.
With just a couple minutes of the match remaining, a La U attack was repelled by a terrific double save from Newell’s keeper Nahuel Guzmán.
Guzmán saves were excellent, but they also resulted in the goalie exposing his net following his double stop. Yet La U were unable to capitalise as Newell’s veteran centre-half Victor Lopez made a fabulous stop on the line to kill off the Chilean attack.
