VIDEO: Tevez double gives Manchester City the slim edge over United in the Carling Cup; Ghana beat Burkina Faso to qualify for the quarters

Manchester City 2 – Manchester United 1 (Carling Cup semi-final first-leg, January 19, 2010) United struck first in the derby when a 16th minute cross from the right was played in from Valencia and, after Wayne Rooney’s effort was stopped by Given, Ryan Giggs was on hand to net his first derby goal since 1996. City levelled five minutes from the break courtesy of a debatable penalty (was it in the box?) when Rafael tugged at Bellamy, and Carlos Tevez thumped his spot-kick past Van der Sar. In the 65th minute City benefited from another moment of controversy when they won a corner in questionable circumstances, and from the set-play Zabaleta steered a header to Kompany who hooked a cross to the near post, where Carlos Tevez was prowling to stoop in his second.

Leeds pulled level on 56 minutes when Jason Crowe ran in to nod home Andrew Hughes’ delivery. Joe Anyinsah’s 85th minute header gave Carlisle victory and the surprise upset at Elland Road.

Greenock Morton 0 – Celtic 1 (Scottish FA Cup, January 19, 2010) Niall McGinn scored the only goal of the game in the 35th minute when Marc-Antoine Fortune cut the ball back for Irishman to drive home. Tony Mowbray’s side were comfortable from that point and Morton never truly threatened a shock against the SPL giants.

Rangers 2 – Hamilton 0 (AET) (Scottish FA Cup, January 19, 2010) Rangers won the match in extra time, beginning when Kenny Miller’s goalbound effort was touched over the line by Steven Whittaker. Moments later Whittaker put the game beyond Accies with a beauty, finding the top corner with a superb curling shot.

Roda 0 – PSV 1 (Eredivisie, January 19, 2010) A terrible mistake by the Roda keeper in injury time at the end of the first half gifted PSV forward Danny Koevermans a goal from point blank range which he duly whacked in the net.

Adelaide United 2 – Perth Glory 3 (A-League, January 19, 2010) Adelaide took the lead through a lucky Lucas Pantelis goal in the 13th minute and then doubled the advantage when Travis Dodd scored for the third time in as many matches in the 53rd minute. Adelaide lost defender Iain Fyfe early in the second half and Perth took advantage as captain Jacob Burns inspired the comeback with a double before loan striker Daniel McBreen sealed the deal in the 77th minute.

Burkina Faso 0 – Ghana 1 (African Cup of Nations, January 19, 2010) Burkina Faso started brightly in their final group game, but the Black Stars took the lead on the half hour when keeper Diakite could only punch a clearance to Amoah, who curled a ball into the box where the nonexistent marking was exploited by Andre Ayew who headed home into the left-hand corner.
