Coventry 1 – Portsmouth 2 (AET) (FA Cup 3rd round replay, January 12, 2010) The Sky Blues took the lead against Pompey after 22 minutes, the South Coasters failed to clear their lines from a long ball and Leon Best was allowed to turn and smash a terrific, unstoppable shot past Begovic. It looked for all the world that Pompey would be dumped out the cup, only for for Liverpool defender Stephen Wright to head an unbelievably unnecessary own goal into his own net in injury time. With the final minute of extra time ticking over, Coventry’s defence lost their concentration from a corner and Aaron Mokoena was able to head the 2008 champions into the next round.

Bristol City 1 – Cardiff 1 (FA Cup 3rd round, January 12, 2010) A bizarre goal lead to Cardiff’s opener at Bristol City in the 76th minute, home keeper Gerken came racing out of his area only to fluff his clearance and Michael Chopra was on hand to collect the loose ball and produce a brilliant first-time curling finish into the empty net. But City equalised in injury time, substitute Gavin Williams driving a low shot into the corner after being set up by Maynard.

Egypt 3 – Nigeria 1 (African Cup of Nations, January 12, 2010) Arguably the first big match of the African Cup of Nations saw Egypt take on Nigeria, and the Flying Eagles struck first against the reigning champs with a thunderous 12th minute drive from Hoffenhiem forward Chinedu Obasi. A terrific match then unfolded, Egypt controlling possession against a resilient Nigeria rearguard, but it was a mistake that lead to the Pharaohs leveller 10 minutes from the break as a slick pass from midfield saw Emad Motab beat keeper Enyeama to the ball and the striker rolled his shot into an empty net. Seven minutes after the break Egypt took the lead with a cracker, Zidan laid the ball back to Ahmed Hassan on the edge of the box the captain whacked a deflected shot into the far corner. With Nigeria flailing in the final stages, a late Egyptian attack saw ball to squared to Mohamed Nagy Gedo and the forward drilled home his just his second goal for the national team to wrap up the points.
