Aston Villa 0 – Manchester United 0 (Premier League, November 22, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.)Â Cristiano Ronaldo warmed up Brad Friedel’s hands with an earlier shot after 13 minutes, while at the other end Nigel Reo-Coker found some space and fired a off a shot which Van der Sar had to get down to save. Ronaldo dragged a free-kick wide of the post as the first-half ended in stalemate. (First-half highlights here.) Ashley Young floated a terrific right wing shot which Van der Sar finger-tipped over the bar straight after the break. For United, Rooney was struggling to make an impact as he smashed a half-volley wide, wide and handsome at the back post.
Manchester City 3 – Arsenal 0 (Premier League, November 22, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.)Â Benjani couldn’t quite connect with a cross midway through the half at Eastlands. The best chance of the half for Arsenal came to Song after Hart had parried Nasri’s free-kick and Bendtner had back-heeled to the Cameroonian. In injury-time of the first-half, Stephen Ireland profited from an awful mix-up between Clichy and Silvestre and fired City ahead. Ten minutes into the second period, Robinho lifted the ball over Almunia for City’s second after great work by SWP. Robinho could have scored a third when he rounded Almunia but Djorou blocked on the line. Robin van Persie had a goal disallowed for kicking the ball out of Hart’s hands and Daniel Sturridge did get the third from the penalty spot late on.
Chelsea 0 – Newcastle 0 (Premier League, November 22, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) Shay Given saved from a Lampard header with the first action of note at Stamford Bridge. Ashley Cole also went close in the first-half. (First-half highlights here.) Early in the second half Joe Cole thought he had got the opener, but it was ruled out (wrongly) by the linesman. Liverpool 0 – Fulham 0 (Premier League, November 22, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.)Â Just before the half-hour mark Robbie Keane had a great chance to put Liverpool one-up but Schwarzer did well. Portsmouth 2 – Hull 2 (Premier League, November 22, 2008) A depleted Pompey side twice led through a Peter Crouch header in 21 minutes (first-half highlights here) and Glen Johnson’s ferocious 25-yard shot either side of Michael Turner’s third goal of the season from a corner. But the Tigers got a late leveller through Noe Pamarot’s own goal in the 86th minute. (Second-half highlights here.)
Middlesbrough 1 – Bolton 3 (Premier League, November 22, 2008) Matty Taylor’s free-kick found the head of Gretar Steinsson in the 8th minute, to net the opener. Steinsson returned the favour two minutes later as Taylor made it 2-nil. (First-half highlights here.) Emmanuel Pogatetz struck a half-volley past Jaaskelainen in the 77th minute from Downing’s corner, but only a minute later Bolton’s two-goal lead was restored, when Johan Elmander received the ball in the Boro box and fired past Turnbull. Stoke 1 – West Brom 0 (Premier League, November 22, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) Danny Higginbotham’s 84th minute cross was nodded past Scott Carson by Mamady Sidibe to send the Baggies back home without a win since the start of October.
Plymouth 2 – Cardiff 1 (Championship, November 22, 2008) Plymouth striker Emile Mpenza gave his side the lead in the 39th minute when his outstretched leg turned the ball in the net. And the Pilgrims had the benefit of a huge slice of fortune netting their second minutes later, Chris Clark’s cross was helped on the bar by the wind and Paul Gallagher fired home n the follow-up. Michael Chopra beat the offside trap at the start of the second half to give Cardiff a lifeline.
Real Madrid 1 – Recreativo Huelva 0 (La Liga, November 22, 2008) Real took a halftime lead over Recre through Wesley Sneijder’s deflected shot that looped over the keeper into the net.
Villarreal 0 – Valladolid 3 (La Liga, November 22, 2008) Jonathan Sesma scored twice and Luis Prieto added a third in a sensational first half as Valladolid, who beat Real Madrid last weekend, took another big scalp.
Inter Milan 1 – Juventus 0 (Serie A, November 22, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) It was a difficult start for Juve losing Tiago after just two minutes, while Inter were struggling to really test Manninger at the other end, Zlatan firing an easy shot for the keeper to save. Sulley Muntari saw his back post header saved by Manninger and Ibrahimovic dragged his one-on-one shot wide of the post as Inter began to turn the screw. After the break it was the same story, Zlatan again missing the target when clean through. But Inter’s dominance eventually paid dividends in the 72nd minute, Sulley Muntari tucking the ball home at the far post. Del Piero came close with a header in the final stages.
Fiorentina 4 – Udinese 2 (Serie A, November 22, 2008) Udinese moved ahead courtesy of a fine striker’s goal from Antonio Floro Flores who collected the ball on the edge of the box, spun and struck a beauty past Frey. After the break the Viola drew level as Adrian Mutu cheekily chipped in a penalty after Gillardino was brought down in the box, and it wasn’t long before the turnaround was completed when Riccardo Montolivo put the hosts up 2-1 with his first goal of the season. Montolivo was quick in chalking up his second, cleaning up a poor clearance with a left foot strike. A minute later it was four when Gilardino got on the scoresheet, but in a frantic ending Comotto saw red with Di Natale converting the resulting spot-kick.
Rimini 1 – Bari 1 (Serie B, November 22, 2008)
Brescia 2 – Vicenza 1 (Serie B, November 22, 2008) Volta had given the visitors the advantage, but nine minutes later Caracciolo set up Zambrella’s equaliser. Possanzini came off the bench to net the decisive goal, pouncing on Volta’s comical howler.
Ancona 2 – Mantova 1 (Serie B, November 22, 2008) Costacurta suffered his first defeat on the Mantova bench despute having led through Rincon’s deflected effort. A goal from Siqueira and a Nassi screamer turned it around for Ancona.

Schalke 3 – Borussia Monchengladbach 1 (Bundesliga, November 22, 2008) Halil Altintop fired Schalke into the lead at home to Monchengladbach. Five minutes later Jefferson Farfan doubled the scoreline with a penalty. Rob Friend pulled a goal back for the away side on the half hour. Altintop restored Schalke’s lead on the stroke of half-time.
Cologne 1 – Hoffenheim 3 (Bundesliga, November 22, 2008) Demba Ba put Hoffenheim in front at Cologne. Midway through the second period, by which time both teams were down to ten men, Vedad Ibisevic tapped in to all but ensure Hoffenheim return to the top of the Bundesliga. Petit gave the home side some hope with a deflected free-kick but Ibisevic completed the scoring with a clinical strike with three minutes to go.
Bayern Munich 4 – Energie Cottbus1 (Bundesliga, November 22, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Ervin Skela got his first goal of the season as his free-kick evaded everyone to give Energie Cottbus a surprise lead, only for Franck Ribery to equalise with a stunning free kick. Seven minutes before the break Martin Demichelis headed Bayern ahead. After half-time Miroslav Klose got the third after fine play from Ribery. The fourth came shortly after as Italians Oddo and Luca Toni combined with the striker volleying home from a corner.
Arminia Bielelfeld 2 – Bayer Leverkusen 1 (Bundesliga, November 22, 2008) Arminia Bielefeld shocked league leaders Leverkusen when Artur Wichniarek fired them in front after the break. Daniel Halfar got the second, hooking home after some pressure from the home side. Patrick Helmes pulled one back for Leverkusen.
Wolfsburg 4 – Stuttgart 1 (Bundesliga, November 22, 2008) Stuttgart led at half-time through Martin Lanig’s 17th minute goal before Grafite levelled for Wolfsburg on 51 minutes. Grafite put the hosts in front on 76 minutes before Edin Dzeko netted on 79 and 85 minutes to clinch the points.
Eintracht Frankfurt 4 – Hannover 0 (Bundesliga, November 22, 2008) Nikos Liberopoulos struck twice either side of the break while Marco Russ and Martin Fenin were also on target.
PSG 1 – Lyon 0 (Ligue 1, November 22, 2008) Ludovic Giuly netted the only goal midway through the first half and PSG held on to move into the top five. Lyon had Juninho dismissed in the closing stages.
Bordeaux 1 – Rennes 1 (Ligue 1, November 22, 2008) Bordeaux keeper Valverde gifted Rennes the opener, hitting am attempted volleyed-clearance straight into Thomert who had the simply job of scoring into an empty net. On the hour mark Rennes suffered their own defensive meltdown with Yoann Gourcuff slipping home the equaliser.
St. Etienne 0 – Nice 1 (Ligue 1, November 22, 2008) Relegation-doomed St. Etienne fell behind to Nice when Oliver Echouafni was given too much space from a corner to head home.
Valenciennes 2 – Sochaux 2 (Ligue 1, November 22, 2008) Incredibly bad Valenciennes defending presented Erdinc with a goal-scoring opportunity on a silver platter which the striker gobbled up. Just after the hour mark the hosts levelled, Sochaux failed to clear their lines and were embarrassed when Saez’s volley went through a clutter of players before rolling through the keeper’s legs. The turnaround was complete when more disorganised defending was punished by Audel, only for Sloan Privat to pop up for the visitors four minutes from time.
Caen 1 – Auxerre 0 (Ligue 1, November 22, 2008) Reynald Lemaitre headed Caen in the lead over under-perming Auxerre.
Lorient 1 – Toulouse 0 (Ligue 1, November 22, 2008) Kevin Gameiro’s second half goal settled the match.
St. Mirren 1 – Celtic 3 (SPL, November 22, 2008) After holding out for just over an hour, Celtic stormed into the lead when Giorgos Samaras turned in a teasing cross from Hinkel. Celtic soon seized the initiative to pull further ahead, Samaras lifting a ball towards Shunsuke Nakamura with the Japanese star controlling expertly and scoring. The second half demolition was completed by Cillian Sheridan who tapped in third ten minutes from time, although the hosts did get a late consolation through Jim Hamilton.
PSV 4 – Heracles 0 (Eredivisie, November 22, 2008) Francisco Rodriguez crashed in an unstoppable 25-yard shot to open for PSV. Further goals from Afellay, Lazovic and Dzsudzsak wrapped up the game in the opening 38 minutes.
Associacao Naval 0 – Sporting Lisbon 1 (Superliga, November 22, 2008) Liedson’s 15th minute goal was the only goal in an entertaining match. Lazaroni missed a penalty for Naval while Derlei and Caneira saw red for Sporting.

Spartak Moscow 1 – Zenit St. Petersburg 3 (Russian Premier Liga, November 22, 2008) Zenit’s win, Danny netting a brace, ensured that the club finished the season in fifth place and so qualify for next season’s UEFA Cup.
Panathinaikos 3 – Thrasivoulos 0 (Greek Super League, November 22, 2008) Two goals from Antonis Petropoulos and one by Andreas Ivanschitz helped Pana beat visiting Thrasivoulos.
Iraklis 0 – Olympiakos 3 (Greek Super League, November 22, 2008) Goals from Predrag Djordjevic, Fernando Belluschi and Dudu gave Olympiakos a seven point lead at top of league.
Sonderjyske 0 – Brondby 6 (SAS Ligaen, November 22, 2008) Jan Kristiansen bagged a hat-trick in the rout.
Cracovia Krakow 0 – Lech Poznan 1 (Ekstraklasa, November 22, 2008) In the driving snow, Ivan Djurdjeric struck a sweet left-footed winner with eight minutes to go.
