Real Madrid overcome plucky Bilbao; Villarreal and Atletico play out the draw of the season; Valencia pick up a point at Recre

Real Madrid 3 – Athletic Bilbao 2 (La Liga, October 26, 2008) Real raced out the traps and went two up inside the opening half hour, Sneijder rifling home a left foot drive and Higuain coolly slotting home the second. Villarreal 4 – Atletico Madrid 4 (La Liga, October 26, 2008) Atletico were ahead within sixty seconds, Simao let rip with a beauty into the top corner. Simao was then responsible for teeing up Forlan for 2-nil at the break. Marcos Senna pulled a goal back for the Yellow Submarine with a speculative shot that the keeper fumbled, and the score was level when Llorente slipped home the equaliser after good work from Rossi. Pires then set up Rodriguez for the third as Atletico’s defensive feel to pieces, and the game looked over when Rossi completed an amazing 19 minute spell. But back came Atletico, firstly through a fine solo goal from Simao and then through an 85th minute equaliser from Garcia.

Recreativo Huelva 1 – Valencia 1 (La Liga, October 26, 2008) Recre scored with their first attack of the second half, Guerrero cut in from the left and teed up Camunas who scored off the near post. David Villa levelled for Valencia after a back post cross from Joaquin.

Numancia 2 – Racing Santander 1 (La Liga, October 26, 2008) Numancia led through Javier Barkero in the 26th before Mohammed Tchite’s penalty made it 1-1. The hosts then moved out of last place after Domingo Cisma’s goal in the fifth-minute of injury time gave the team its first victory since an opening day win over Barcelona.

Deportivo La Coruna 0 – Sporting Gijon 3 (La Liga, October 26, 2008) David Barral opened the scoring with a 23rd minute penalty after he was felled by Alberto Lopo before turning provider for Carmelo four minutes later. Depor had Diego Colotto sent off before half-time and Diego Castro completed the scoring six minutes from time.

Sevilla 0 – Malaga 1 (La Liga, October 26, 2008) Adrian Lopez ended Andres Palop’s club record scoreless streak at 511 minutes in the 16th when the Malaga striker coolly slotted a right-footed strike underneath the Sevilla goalkeeper to boost the newly promoted club into sixth.
