Ten minutes later the Catalans made the hosts pay when Bojan and Xavi combined before Leo Messi picked up the ball in the box and saw his shot take a deflection en route to goal. Just after the half hour it was two to Barcelona as Xavi Hernandez curled home a stunning from 25-yards out. In the 41st minute it was game, set and match to Barca as Bojan Krkic spun past his marker and nicked the ball around the covering defender and produced the clinical finish to boot. Villarreal pulled a goal back midway through the second half when Joseba Llorente latched onto a through-ball and toe-poked his effort past Valdes. Barca restored their 3-goal cushion in the 88th minute when Xavi freed Dani Alves down the right and the full-back played in Leo Messi who produced a dinked finish to seal the three points.
Espanyol 0 – Valencia 2 (La Liga, May 1, 2010) Valencia’s charge for the Champions League remained firmly on target with victory at Espanyol, Nikola Zigic got across his marker to first Los Che into a second half lead. Zigic sealed the win smashing home a second at the back post soon after.
Deportivo La Coruna 0 – Zaragoza 1 (La Liga, May 1, 2010) Zaragoza forward Adrian Colunga drilled a low right-footer into the far left corner to put the struggling visitors into a potential season saving lead away at Deportivo five minutes into the second half.
Xerez 2 – Almeria 1 (La Liga, May 1, 2010)Â 10 men Xerez recorded a last ditch victory against Almeria at the Nuevo Chapin winning 2-1 thanks to a 95th minute winner from Mario Bermejo.
Malaga 1 – Sporting Gijon 1 (La Liga, May 1, 2010) Malaga striker Baha hit the back of his own net just before half time to give Sporting the lead, but Felipe Caicedo scored a late equaliser to keep the hosts just out of the bottom three.
Tenerife 2 – Racing Santander 1 (La Liga, May 1, 2010) Tenerife beat Racing Santander with goals from Roman Martinez and Ayoze.
