La Liga: Ronaldo at the double as Real hit five; Valencia stunned by Sporting; Bilbao edge Villarreal

Real Madrid 5 – Xerez 0 (La Liga, September 20, 2009) Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the first minute with a trademark run and low finish with his right foot. It took until the last 15 minutes for Real to put real gloss on the scoreline, Ronaldo got his second with a powerful header, Guti continued his fine recent scoring run and in the dying minutes Karim Benzema and Ruud van Nistelrooy reminded Pellegrini of their finishing prowess.

Valencia 2 – Sporting Gijon 2 (La Liga, September 20, 2009) David Barral stunned the hosts with a goal after seven minutes but former Sporting striker David Villa levelled midway through the first half. Villa scored a lovely second to seemingly set Valencia on their way the three points, but Gregory levelled four minutes from time after Miguel Moya’s error.

Athletic Bilbao 3 – Villareal 2 (La Liga, September 20, 2009) Fernando Llorente nodded in Bilbao’s opener and fired in a second off the post before the break at San Mames. Cani pulled one back for Villarreal early in the second period and after Javi Martinez had restored the home side’s advantage with a header from a corner, Santi Cazorla netted a fine free kick near the end.

Real Zaragoza 1 – Valladolid 2 (La Liga, September 20, 2009) Garcia Marquitos put Valladolid ahead after only four minutes after Da Silva Diego Costa battled to the byline and cut the ball back into his path, but Montana Jorge Lopez leveled on 26. Gonzalez Sisi put Valladolid ahead again 11 minutes after halftime, while Lopez missed two good chances to equalise.

Almeria 1 – Getafe 0 (La Liga, September 20, 2009) Michel scored the only goal of the game three minutes after the break to move Almeria into seventh spot.
