La Liga goals: Messi & Alves shine as Barca crush Deopr; Sevilla scrap past Numancia

Barcelona 5 – Deportivo La Coruna 0 (La Liga, January 17, 2009) Barca took the lead over Depor after 21 minutes, Leo Messi scoring a super goal after a solo slalom run. One became two six minutes later, Thierry Henry scoring a rare header from Danny Alves’ cross after Messi refused to let the ball go out of play. And the first half blitz against La Coruna was completed by Samuel Eto’o following yet another Alves cross from the right. (First-half highlights here.) Barca killed the game with two goals in the final 10 minutes, Henry bagged his second before Aranzubia brought down Puyol and Eto’o dispatched the penalty.

Sevilla 1 – Numancia 0 (La Liga, January 17, 2009) Renato’s late strike gave Sevilla an unconvincing over Numancia and saw the Andalusians move into second place.
