Athletic Bilbao 3 – Valencia 2 (La Liga, January 18, 2009) David Villa broke the deadlock inside two minutes in Bilbao with a fine finish from Mata’s precise pass. But the lead was short lived as Igor Gabilondo drew the hosts level heading home Lopez’s cross. Fernando Morientes restored Valencia’s lead tucking home Villa’s cross. Four minutes before the break the home side equalised again through a flicked header from Javi Martinez. In the 90th minute Fernando Llorente scored a penalty to secure a sensational late win.
Real Madrid 3 – Osasuna 1 (La Liga, January 18, 2009) After seeing Ramon Calderon leave Real Madrid in disgrace this past week, matters got even worse on the pitch as lowly Osasuna took the lead after 20 minutes thanks to Javad Nekounam’s header. But the Bernabau had something to cheer at the start of the second half as a Sergio Ramos’ speculative shot got the better of keeper Ricardo. Gonzalo Higuain completed the turnaround tucking home Robben’s neat pass. Keeping up his tremendous recent form Arjen Robben stuck a third at the death.
Recreativo Huelva 2 – Sporting Gijon 0 (La Liga, January 18, 2009) For the second week running Jorge scored an own goal for Sporting, on this occasion turning a cross into his own net when under pressure from Colunga.
Getafe 0 – Racing Santander 1 (La Liga, January 18, 2009) Nikola Zigic’s 24th minute goal proved to be enough to give Racing the points.
Malaga 4 – Espanyol 0 (La Liga, January 18, 2009) Malaga piled the misery on struggling Espanyol. The home side made the vital breakthrough ten minutes before the break courtesy of Adrian Lopez’s strike. Malaga doubled their advantage from the penalty spot on 57 minutes as Apone converted the spot-kick after Adrian Lopez was fouled by Mari Lacruz. Nabil Baha made it 3-0 with another penalty five minutes from time and Albert Luque completed the rout with a fourth in stoppage time.
Valladolid 1 – Betis 3 (La Liga, January 18, 2009) Xisco set Betis on their way with the opener on 16 minutes, but Luis Prieto equalised for Valladolid six minutes later. Sergio Garcia struck twice in the second-half with two fine finishes to give Betis the points.
Huesca 1 – Xerez 1 (Segunda Division, January 18, 2009) The comic value was provided in the first half when Huesca’s substitute Helguera was sent off while still on the bench, with the player dragged to the floor by his own team’s staff as the red mist descended.
Cordoba 1 – Real Zaragoza 0 (Segunda Division, January 17, 2009)
