Barcelona 3 – Sporting Gijon 1 (La Liga, February 8, 2009) Barcelona took the lead at home to Sporting Gijon with an incredible break, 12 seconds after they were defending a corner, Henry crossed for Samuel Eto’o to score after Iniesta had ran the length of the pitch. Before the break, Samuel Eto’o doubled the lead, finishing off another fine move, the architect this time was Lionel Messi. Barca’s third was all about the tenacity of Dani Alves, the Brazilian picked up the ball in the box, shimmied, and fired high into the near post. Kike Mateo pulled a goal back for Gijon two minutes later.
Osasuna 1 – Valencia 0 (La Liga, February 8, 2009) Osasuna moved out of the bottom three for the first time since the middle of October thanks to Miguel Flano’s strike 12 minutes into the second half.
Recreativo Huelva 0 – Atletico Madrid 3 (La Liga, February 8, 2009) Atletico broke the deadlock at Recre with a super goal, Sinama-Pongolle worked the space down the right hand side and his cross was met on the run by Kun Aguero. In the 28th minute Aguero and Diego Forlan combined to add the second, and Atletico’s front two were at it again as Forlan put the game out of sight.
Villarreal 2 – Numancia 1 (La Liga, February 8, 2009) Giuseppe Rossi gave Villarreal the lead over Numancia after 12 minutes. Aranda pulled the visitors level five minutes before the break. The hosts regained the lead with a flamboyant second, Pires fed the ball into Cani who juggled with the ball before lifting it over his head into the box where Rossi was able to bag his second.
Valladolid 2 – Athletic Bilbao 1 (La Liga, February 8, 2009) Victor netted from the penalty spot in the 38th minute and doubled his tally midway through the second half before Pablo Orbaiz scrambled in the rebound after Fernando Llorente smashed a penalty against the post.
Getafe 1 – Espanyol 1 (La Liga, February 8, 2009) Seven minutes in, new signing Ivan Alonso opened his account for Espanyol. But Getafe were level midway through the first half after Javier Casquero crossed for Roberto Soldado for the equaliser.
Malaga 3 – Almeria 2 (La Liga, February 8, 2009) Kala Uche made it 1-0 to the Rojiblancos midway through the first half and Alvaro Negredo managed a second just before the break. Albert Luque pulled a goal back for Malaga before Salva Ballesta equalised with a fine finish. Salva Ballesta then completed the unlikely comeback to steal all three points.
Mallorca 1 – Deportivo La Coruna 1 (La Liga, February 8, 2009) Mallorca looked to be on course for a rare victory after Aritz Aduriz outjumped two Depor defenders on 55 minutes to head in a looping cross from Enrique Corrales. But Joan Verdu equalised from the penalty spot with just over 10 minutes left to leave Mallorca stuck in the relegation zone.
Albacete 0 – Xerez 2 (Segunda Division, February 7, 2009) The highlights included footage of the home crowd protesting against their management as well as footage of a barrier collapsing under the weight of the Xerez supporters.
