Athletic Bilbao 1 – Barcelona 1 (La Liga, November 21, 2009) Barca were without the injured Zlatan Ibrahimovic and swine flu victims Yaya Toure and Eric Abidal, while Rafael Marquez was also missing undergoing H1N1 tests, and Leo Messi began the match by receiving a nasty kick in the face while still standing. The deadlock was broken by Dani Alves. Xavi squeezed an angled pass through to the Brazilian, who produced a calm right-footed finish across Iraizoz and into the bottom-right corner. Gaizka Toquero leveled for Athletic less than ten minutes later.
Real Madrid 1 – Racing Santander 0 (La Liga, November 21, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) With Cristiano Ronaldo more interested in playing with his phone than watching the match, Gonzalo Higuain headed Real in front against Racing Santander after the visitors failed to defence a right wing cross.
Tenerife 1 – Sevilla 2 (La Liga, November 21, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Sevilla robbed the ball off Tenerife inside their own half after the half hour, Jesus Navas led the attack down the right hand side and his cross was confidently tucked home by Diego Perotti. Renato’s long-range strike straight after the break underlined the Andalusian team’s attacking superiority, while Nino struck late for Tenerife.
Deportivo La Coruna 2 – Atletico Madrid 1 (La Liga, November 21, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Sergio Aguero put Atletico ahead in the fourth minute after a lapse by defender Alberto Lopo gave the Argentina striker space to shoot from an acute angle. Atletico’s defence looked vulnerable and La Coruna defender Diego Colotto drew level in the 21st, heading in at the far post from a corner. La Coruna’s Jose Guardado scored from the penalty spot deep into injury time to leave Atletico with seven points and one win from its first 11 games of the season.
