Schalke 4 – Energie Cottbus 0 (Bundesliga, April 17, 2009) Christian Pander and Halil Altintop put the hosts in control in the first half, and Jermaine Jones and Kevin Kuranyi added goals after the break. Cottbus remain deep in the relegation mire, a point from safety and now with a worse goal difference than rock-bottom Karlsruhe.

Heracles 4 – NAC Breda 0 (Eredivisie, April 17, 2009) Jan Wuytens opened the scoring after only 12 minutes, before Ricky van den Bergh doubled the lead from the penalty spot midway through the first half. Juha Hakola added a third with only 27 minutes on the clock and Willie Overtoom made it four minutes before the break. The win moves Heracles four points clear of danger in 13th place while NAC remain in seventh.

Amadora 0 – Pacos Ferreira 2 (Superliga, April 17, 2009) A poor headed own goal from Fernando Alexandre and and second from Rui Migel handed Pacos the three points.

Trabzonspor 2 – Genclerbirligi 0 (Super Lig, April 17, 2009) Ibrahima Yattara scored one of solo goals of the season to hand Trabzonspor a 28th minute lead, the bleached-blonde striker weaved his way past four opposition players before rifling home a thunderbolt from 25-yards out. Gokhan Unal made the points safe with a second at the death leaving Trabzonspor title hopes still in the balance.

Triestina 2 – Grosseto 3 (Serie B, April 17, 2009) The home side got off to a strong start, Della Rocca looping home a header from a Testini’s cross. Sansovini equalised in first half stoppages with a right-foot strike under the bar. After the break Pellicori and Della Rocca forced desperate saves out of the goalkeepers, but Pellicori allowed Grosseto to turn the game around with another header. It was chaos in the final minutes, as Allegretti drew Triestina level with a free-kick only for Bonanni to knock down for Pichlmann 60 seconds later.

Ascoli 2 – Frosinone 1 (Serie B, April 17, 2009) The visitors took a 22nd minute lead against the run of play as Cariello threaded through for Tavares to strike. Soncin equalised for Ascoli after keeper Sicignano parried the ball into his path. Sicignano beat away another screamer from Sommese and was eventually beaten by a splendid Cani lob.

LASK Linz 0 – Ried 3 (T-Mobile Bundesliga, April 17, 2009) Hamdi Salihi opened the scoring in the eighth minute and Ried had to wait until late in the second half to increase their lead. Their cause was helped by the dismissal of Ivica Vastic in the 70th minute, Drechsel grabbing his first five minutes later. Keeper Gerald Gansterer also saw red four minutes from time for a cynical foul and Drechsel completed his double from the penalty spot in injury time.

Carlao headed the opener form a corner before Zezinho scored a stunning second from 30-yards on the half hour. Having set up the first two goals, Brazil’s number 10 Coutinho added the third from the penalty spot, with Felipinho claiming the fourth at the death.
