It got better for the Toon just before the break, Habib Beye crossed in from the right and Obafemi Martins headed home number two. The Baggies brought on Ishmael Miller at the break, and the striker pulled a goal back in the 65th minute after collecting a fine through-ball from Rob Koren. Thereafter it was far from a vintage performance from the Magpies, but they held on the move up to 15th in the table.
Derby 3 – Norwich 1 (Championship, October 28, 2008) Goals by Paul Green and Rob Hulse had fired the Rams 2-up inside 29 minutes. John Kennedyâ€™s 64th minute header revived Norwichâ€™s hopes but they were soon extinguished when Kazmierczak hit a third for Paul Jewellâ€™s side 10 minutes from time.
Birmingham 3 – Sheffield Wednesday 1 (Championship, October 25, 2008) O’Connor headed the home side in front after 11 minutes, only to see Etienne Esajas equalise three minutes later from a quick free-kick. But Birmingham regained the lead a minute later through O’Connor before Kevin Phillips added the third.
Benidorm 0 – Barcelona 1 (Copa Del Rey, October 28, 2008) A 55th minute beauty from Bojan Krkic was the difference.
Pisa 1 – Avellino 1 (Serie B, October 28, 2008) The visitors took the lead in first half stoppages, Pecorari scored after his initial header was saved. But Greco nodded in the equaliser from Job’s cross to extend Pisa’s unbeaten run to six games.
Vicenza 2 – Modena 2 (Serie B, October 28, 2008) Sgrigna gave Vicenza a strong start with a marvellous solo effort, but Modena moved ahead early in the second half. Catellani fired home a low drive before Biabiany hit the second on the break. Back came Vicenza, Margiotta equalised with a goal from nine yards out.

Werder Bremen 0 – Bayer Leverkusen 2 (Bundesliga, October 28, 2008) Bayer Leverkusen took the lead away at Bremen in the 70th minute, Arturo Vidal stroking the ball in after Werder failed to clear their lines. Friedrich made sure of the points ten minutes from time, scoring following a Bayer corner.
Arminia Bielefeld 1 – Energie Cottbus 1 (Bundesliga, October 28, 2008) Dimitar Rangelov fired the visitors in front in the 31st minute but was then sent off shortly before the interval for his second bookable offence. With their man advantage Arminia pressed in the second half, finding an equaliser through Artur Wichniarek’s fine turn and shot.

Ado Den Haag 0 – PSV 2 (Eredivisie, October 28, 2008) Eric Addo gave PSV the lead with an excellent late run into the box from which we scored. With time running out PSV scored a breakaway goal, Otman Bakkal burst through the middle and slotted home the killer second.
