Livorno 4 – Grosseto 1 (Agg. 4-3) (Serie A/B play-off, June 11, 2009) Livorno clinched a return to Serie A after overturning a two-goal deficit from the first leg. A Francesco Tavano penalty gave the home side the lead only for Marco Sansovini to equalise nine minutes later. Tomas Danilevicius tapped home on the stroke of half-time and Giuseppe Abruzzese received his second booking to leave Grosseto with ten men. Early second-half goals from Alessandro Diamanti and Danilevicus secured Livorno’s passage to the top division, whilst the away side left in disgrace as Agostino Garofalo, Gianluca Freddi and Luigi Consonni all received their marching orders.
Lugano 1 – Lucerne 0 (Swiss Super Leauge promotion/relegation playoff first-leg, June 10, 2009) Pascal Renfer’s 15th minute goal proved the difference between the sides.
Bulgaria 3 – Israel 4 (European U21 Championship qualifiers, June 10, 2009) Despite taking a 3-1 lead against 10-man Bulgaria in the 54th minute, Israel squandered its lead within 12 minutes and needed a late winner by Ben Sahar to claim all three points.
