Liverpool let victory slip through their fingers as Everton draw the Merseyside derby; Landon Donovan scores again in Bayern win

Liverpool 1 – Everton 1 (Premier League, January 19, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) In the Merseyside derby Pepe Reina was forced to stay alert in the early exchanges, turning away Tim Cahill’s header which was creeping inside the post. The best chance of the half fell the way of the hosts, Fernando Torres raced clean through on Howard’s goal only to strike the foot of the post with the goal at his mercy. Albert Riera also flashed a shot wide just before the break. (First half highlights here.) With the game approaching the final 20 minutes Steven Gerrard (who else!) broke the deadlock in front of the Kop, crashing home a 20-yard daisy-cutter into the bottom corner of the net. But just when it seemed like the Reds would hold out for the win, Benayoun needlessly fouled Anichebe just outside the box and Arteta’s pacey free-kick was steered goalwards by an unmarked Tim Cahill. (Both goals can be seen here.)
