Juventus 1 – Fiorentina 0 (Serie A, January 24, 2009) Juve broke through the Fiorentina backline with a brilliant move that spotted Claudio Marchisio breaking through from midfield into the box, and he finished the move with a cute finish on the angle. In response Fiorentina hit the bar and saw Gillardino’s effort ruled out for offside. Sebastian Frey made a wonderful double save on the stroke of halftime for the Viola.

Reggina 0 – Chievo 1 (Serie A, January 24, 2009) Chievo won the basement battle at Reggina with a last minute beauty from Vincenzo Italiano after the hosts lost Carlos Carmona to a straight red card four minutes before the break.

Rimini 0 – Parma 0 (Serie B, January 24, 2009) Rimini had the best chances when Ricchiuti fired over from close range, however Francesco Guidolin was sent off for dissent after protesting that Paloschi should have received a penalty.

Grosseto 4 – Pisa 1 (Serie B, January 24, 2009) Genevier gave Pisa the lead from the spot. Pellicori equalised and Cordova steered a right-foot scorcher into the top corner from 25-yards. Degano should have levelled for Pisa but he blasted a penalty off target. Pellicori was sent off for Grosseto, but Pichlmann still bagged a late brace for the hosts to round out the scoreline.

Cittadella 4 – Piacenza 4 (Serie B, January 24, 2009) Guzman’s opener was cancelled out by Iori’s penalty. After the break Moscardelli and a Guzman penalty sent Piacenza 3-1 up, but within seven minutes Bonvissuto and Gorini had turned it all around again. Oliveira then put Cittadella ahead only for Rickler to tie the match 4-4 in the last minute.

Vicenza 3 – Ascoli 1 (Serie B, January 24, 2009) Forestieri’s opener was equalised by Bucchi, but Morosini and a late Margiotta effort sealed the home win.

Brescia 2 – Empoli 0 (Serie B, January 24, 2009) Savio Nsereko was nowhere to be seen, being on the verge of joining West Ham for £6m. Defender Mareco broke the deadlock heading in a free-kick at the far post, then Marzoratti’s foul gave Possanzini the chance to convert a penalty.

Sassuolo 1 – Salernitana 0 (Serie B, January 24, 2009)

Frosinone 1 – Mantova 2 (Serie B, January 24, 2009)
