Macedonia 2 – Spain 3 (International Friendly, August 12, 2009) Spain looked dead and buried at the break as Goran Pandev scored after three minutes and the again on the half hour to leave the Macedonians in dreamland. A 50th minute Fernando Torres header started the Spain fightback after the break and Gerald Pique levelled matters after 53 minutes after a shot rebounded off the upright. The amazing turnaround was completed just two minutes later as Albert Riera rifled a stunning third into the roof of the net.
Estonia 0 – Brazil 1 (International Friendly, August 12, 2009) A Brazilian counter-attack broke through the Estonian defence just before the break, Lucio played the ball to Robinho and eventually Luis Fabiano stroked in the opener.
Russia 2 – Argentina 3 (International Friendly, August 12, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) A slick Russian attack tore through the Argentina backline in the 17th minute and Igor Semshov was sent clean through on goal before firing a low shot in the far corner. The Argentinians began to impose themselves as the half wore on, and on the stroke of halftime Kun Aguero smacked an unstoppable swerving bullet into the top corner. (First half highlights here.) Maradona threw on Emiliano Papa and Lisandro Lopez at the break, and within sixty seconds the pair combined with Lopez put the South Americans in front. Maradona then showed the midas touch just before the hour as the coach brought on Napoli’s Jesus Datolo and within thirty seconds the striker had bagged a third. With just over ten minutes to go a deflected Roman Pavyuchenko free-kick cut the deficit by half.
Switzerland 0 – Italy 0 (International Friendly, August 12, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Switzerland held Italy to a draw in Basel in a friendly that saw some impressive performances by the Azzurri’s debutants, but there was also an early injury for Mauro Camoranesi.
