England 3 – France 1 (AET) (U19 European Championships semi-final, July 30, 2009) The Young Lions had a bad start against the old enemy, the French broke down the left through the industrious Yacine Brahimi, and when the ball arrived in the box Magaye Gueye slotted in an 8th minute opener. England equalised in the 37th minute, Danny Drinkwater’s free-kick rebounded straight off the wall, the ball fell to Arsenal’s Henri Lansbury and the midfielder struck a beauty from 20-yards out. The second half brought no more goals but the French had Corchia sent off with 20 minutes remaining. In extra-time England made their advantage count as Villa’s Nathan Delfouneso put the Lions ahead for the first time in the match. In the 105th minute Delfouneso put the match to bed with his second, a wonderful jinking run capped off with a calm finish.
