U20 World Cup: Maicon takes Brazil to the semi-finals downing Germany; Costa Rica late show downs UAE

Brazil 2 – Germany 1 (AET) (U20 World Cup, October 10, 2009) Neither Germany nor Brazil were able to convert their chances during the first half (highlights here) of their quarter-final. The Germans got their noses in front midway through the second half when Schalke striker Lewis Holtby headed in a cross at the back post. Just as it looked all over, Maicon forced home a late equaliser for Brazil to send the match into extra time where Maicon amazingly needed just sixty seconds to fire the young Samba Boys into the lead.

UAE 1 – Costa Rica 2 (AET) (U20 World Cup, October 10, 2009) Ahmed Ali opened the scoring for the UAE ahead in the 32nd minute when he fired in a cross from Ahmed Khalil, but Josue Martinez headed in the equaliser five minutes later. The UAE was reduced to 10 men when Mohamed Fawzi was sent off for a foul, and Marcos Urena silenced the home crowd moments later when he found the winner with his stoppage-time goal.
