Marcus Berg fires a hat-trick as Sweden batter Belarus; Italy draw a blank why Serbia

Sweden 5 – Belarus 1 (European Under-21 Championships, June 16, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Sergei Kyslak stunned the host nation with a howitzer from long range just after the half hour, with an early contender for goal of the tournament. Sweden hit back in comprehensive fashion, Rasmus Elm saw his long range effort deflected in and then Marcus Berg took over, the FC Groningen striker beat three men for the first and then finished with aplomb for his second from a fine through ball by Toivonen. Marcus Berg claimed his hat-trick with ten minutes remaining following a fine through ball from Elm and Gustav Svensson claimed the fifth late on with a cracking strike every bit as good as Kyslak’s opener.

Italy 0 – Serbia 0 (European Under-21 Championships, June 16, 2009) Both side cancelled each other out in a stalemate, Serbia keeper Brkic made saves from Giovinco and Balotelli whilst Manchester United’s Zoran Tosic impressed.
