Aston Villa 0 – Juventus 0 (Peace Cup, August 2, 2009) (Pens. 4-3) Martin O’Neill’s side won the Peace Cup, beating Juventus on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes of football. Alessandro Del Piero could have won it for Juve but his penalty was woeful, Carlos Cuellar was the Villa hero, beating Buffon to win the Cup.
Espanyol 3 – Liverpool 0 (Friendly, August 2, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Espanyol opened the Cornella-El Prat Stadium in style, with an impressive win over Liverpool. Luis Garcia nipped in between defenders to claim the first and former Chelsea striker Ben Sahar scored two after coming on as a substitute. Steven Gerrard went close twice with long range efforts.
Arsenal 3 – Rangers 0 (Emirates Cup, August 2, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Arsenal took the lead against Rangers within two minutes thanks to Jack Wilshere. Eduardo doubled the lead in the 10th minute with a smooth left-footed finish. Wilshere was unlucky not to score his second just before the break after some great skill. South China 2 – Tottenham 0 (Friendly, August 2, 2009) After Spurs had dominated a sluggish opening period, South China took the lead thanks to an excellent strike from Chan Siu Ki on 52 minutes. Li Haiqiang grabbed the second from the penalty spot.
Cheltenham 0 – Birmingham City 4 (Friendly, August 2, 2009) Gary O’Connor opened the scoring, Sebastian Larsson scored the second, Kevin Phillips capitalised on some poor defending for the third and Albert Fetackey claimed the fourth.
Dundee United 1 – Newcastle 1 (Friendly, August 2, 2009) Andy Carroll put the Toon ahead. Five minutes later Steve Harper saved a Danny Swanson penalty only for David Goodwillie to score from another penalty late on.
