Heerenveen 2 – Groningen 1 (Eredivisie, March 7, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Groningen had Martijn Meerdink dismissed for a second bookable offence after 25 minutes but the hosts could not capitalise until Christian Grindheim struck 14 minutes into the second half. Groningen levelled through Danny Holla before Gonzalo Garcia was also sent off for two bookable offences. Heerenveen finally made their numerical advantage tell when Vitkar Elm struck a 90th minute winner.

De Graafschap 1 – Heracles 0 (Eredivisie, March 7, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Luuk de Jong’s goal early in the second half was enough for the home side to secure victory and three crucial points, ending a streak of seven games without a victory.

Leixoes 1 – Porto 4 (Superliga, March 7, 2009) Porto took the lead with a 23rd minute penalty from Lucho Gonzalez before second half goals from Hulk (49), Jose Raul Meireles (57) and Ernesto Farias (76) put the match to bed. Jorge Diogo Valente grabbed Leixoes’ consolation in the final minute of the match. Porto maintained their four point advantage over Sporting.

Sporting Lisbon 2 – Pacos Ferreira 0 (Superliga, March 7, 2009) Sporting took a two goal lead into the break against Pacos thanks to goals from Liedson and Derlei.

Anderlecht 2 – Zulte-Waregem 0 (Jupiler League, March 7, 2009) The Brussels outfit needed just five minutes for Tom de Sutter to open the scoring and Marcin Wasilewski added a second in the 26th minute.

Rubin Kazan 1 – CSKA Moscow 2 (AET) (Russian Super Cup, March 7, 2009) CSKA Moscow took the lead through a terrific strike from Lithuanian Deividas Semberas. Just after the hour mark Roman Sharonov equalised from close range for the Russian champions. In extra time Rubin Kazan’s Karadeniz saw red for two bookable offences before Tomas Necid found the winner with seven minutes to go.

Hacettepe 2 – Besiktas 3 (Super Lig, March 7, 2009) Tambwe’s double for Hacettepe was not enough in the face of goals from Besiktas’ lethal forward line of Delgado, Nobre and Bobo.

Trabzonspor 0 – Konyaspor 1 (Super Lig, March 7, 2009) Trabzonspor’s title hopes suffered what may prove to be a critical setback after they went down to an 84th minute winner from Kratochvil.

Panathinaikos 3 – Larissa 0 (Greek Super League, March 7, 2009) Pana warmed up for the visit of Villarreal in the Champions League with a brilliant second half display. Dimitris Salpingidis bagged the first after the home side carved through the Larissa defence. Gilberto Silva claimed the second with a header from a set-play and Lazaros Christodoulopoulos crashed home the third to end a destructive eight minute spell.

Iraklis 2 – Panionios 1 (Greek Super League, March 7, 2009) Anastasios Agritis got the final touch to put Iraklis in the lead against Panionios. Fabien Estoyanoff brought the visitors level in the 73rd minute before Denis Epstein hit the winner with five minutes left on the clock.

Asteras 4 – Aris 0 (Greek Super League, March 7, 2009) Aris should have fallen behind at Asteras when they conceded a penalty had had their keeper sent off, but Marcelao saw the resulting spot kick saved. Down to 10-men though the goal soon came, Bastia scoring with a neat volley from the edge of the box. Marcelao made up for his penalty miss with a sublime chip after the break, Kaounos claimed the third and Horasio Cardozo took advantage of slack defending to wrap up the win.
