Roda 1 – Groningen 1 (Eredivisie, August 8, 2009) Anouar Hadouir fired Roda in front after 19 minutes only for Goran Lovre to level matters on the half hour mark. Groningen’s hopes of claiming three points were dashed though when Danny Holla was sent off after 51 minutes.

Diyarbakirspor 2 – Ankaragucu 2 (Super Lig, August 8, 2009) Ceyhun Eris grabbed a double as Ankaragucu played drew with Diyarbakirspor, who got on the scoresheet through Adnan Gungor and Andres Mendoza.

Grasshoppers 1 – St. Gallen 3 (Swiss Super League, August 8, 2009) Three goals in the first 30 minutes from Moreno Merenda (10), Philipp Muntwiler (27) and Moreno Costanzo (29) gave the visitors a healthy cushion before rock-bottom Grasshoppers saw Senad Lulic sent off shortly before the interval. Alain Schultz got the hosts on the scoresheet after 68 minutes but the fightback ended there allowing St Gallen to move two points behind leaders Young Boys.

Sion 1 – Aarau 1 (Swiss Super League, August 8, 2009) A last-minute goal from substitute Artur Ionita snatched a point for Aarau, cancelling out Enes Fermino’s 55th-minute strike.
