Sporting Lisbon 2 – Fiorentina 2 (Champions League qualifier, August 18, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Juan Manuel Vargas produced a trademark left-footed strike to put Fiorentina one-up at Sporting Lisbon. Simon Vukcevic equalised and then promptly got sent off for a second bookable offence. Being reduced to ten men didn’t stop the home side, Miguel Veloso hammered home a howitzer into the top left-hand corner. The Viola equalised 12 minutes from time through a brilliant goal from Alberto Gillardino, the striker controlling a cross on his shoulder before volleying home on his right peg.
FC Timisoara 0 – Stuttgart 2 (Champions League qualifier, August 18, 2009) Stuttgart won the first leg thanks to two quick-fire goals in the first half, Timo Gebhart opened from the penalty spot before Alexander Helb scored the goal of the round with a brilliant jinking run the saw the former Arsenal midfielder beat four men before slotting past the keeper.
FC Shefiff 0 – Olympiakos 2 (Champions League qualifier, August 18, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) A fizzing effort from Dudu just after the break gave Olympiakos the lead away at FC Sheriff. A solo goal from Konstantinos Mitroglou sealed the match in the final ten minutes.
