UEFA Cup: Bremen knock out St. Etienne; Tyrone Mears scores the tie-breaker in a nail-biting extra-time win for Marseille at Ajax

St. Etienne 2 – Werder Bremen 2 (Agg. 2-3) (UEFA Cup, March 18, 2009) With a 1-0 first leg lead, Werder Bremen all but sealed the tie at Saint Etienne thanks to first half goals from Sebastian Prodl and Claudio Pizarro. Midway through the second period, Yohan Benalouane gave the French side some hope, heading home from close range. And Saint Etienne did level it up on the night when Sebastien Grax claimed a 90th minute goal.

Ajax 2 – Marseille 2 (AET) (Agg. 3-4) (UEFA Cup, March 18, 2009) Ajax drew level on aggregate when Eyong Enoh fired home just after the half hour but Mamadou Niang brought OM level on the night and back into the lead overall two minutes later. With just over quarter of an hour remaining Miralem Sulejmani squared up the tie following great work by Suarez. In extra time Englishman Tyrone Mears became the hero for Frenchman scoring a brave header (his first goal for the club) following a Zenden free-kick in the 109th minute.
